OVERVIEW:
The fellowship is primarily oriented toward clinical work and clinical

tertiary referral practice. Training will involve comprehensive
exposure to both open and arthroscopic surgical techniques for all
types of shoulder/elbow disorders. Fellows will also be exposed to
a high-volume of shoulder arthroplasty cases, both for
reconstruction and for acute shoulder trauma at a Level 1 trauma
center.
The fellow will primarily and independently staff the
Shoulder and Elbow Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical center
weekly. This will involve both clinical and surgical experience and
direct teaching of orthopaedic surgery residents from the University
of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to
participate in the Pediatric Shoulder and Elbow Service at Texas
Scottish Rite Hospital. This involves evaluation and surgical
management of shoulder and elbow disorders in skeletally immature
patients, usually for the sequelae of brachial plexus injury.

Sports Medicine to spend time with other physicians in the group who
primarily care for local collegiate and professional sports teams (SMU
Athletics, Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Texas Rangers).

The fellow will rotate with the Shoulder and Elbow Service physicians on
a structured basis, both in the operating room and in the outpatient

research
Rotations with other fellowship-trained Sports
Medicine surgeons in the group will be individualized based on
interest.
DIDACTIC CONFERENCES AND RESEARCH:
The fellow will participate in a weekly didactic teaching conference
with the Shoulder and Elbow Service staff. This will involve
structured reviews of major topics in textbooks and current
journals. In addition, the fellow will organize and participate in
monthly journal club reviews with the orthopaedic residents from UT
Southwestern.
The fellow will be allocated one research day per
week to pursue clinical and basic science work (either projects of
independent design or those ongoing). Access to biomechanical
testing and cadaveric dissection is available at affiliated
institutions. A full-service arthroscopy lab is also available for
hands-on research and training.
The fellow will be encouraged to complete two
clinically relevant research projects during the fellowship period.
