Goals and
characteristics
The fellow will gain experience in the examination of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand in a one-on-one private practice setting. The major emphasis is on tertiary reconstructive and sports medicine surgery. The fellows will participate with Drs. McCarroll, Norris and Kelly in the office and in the surgical setting. There are monthly orthopaedic conferences through CPMC as well as a sponsored orthopedic meeting on the shoulder, elbow or hand during the year within the continental United States.
The majority of the complex cases will be shoulder arthroplasty, revision shoulder arthroplasty, total. These include both anatomic and reverse shoulder arthroplasties. The complex cases involving bone grafts for humeral, glenoid, and ulnar deficiencies.
The sports oriented oriented procedures commonly include arthroscopic and open treatments of rotator cuff pathology, instability, and both acute and chronic trauma cases.
The majority of the elbow sports injuries are ligament repairs and reconstructions.
With regard to the elbow, the experience of the majority of the cases involve total elbow arthroplasty, revision elbow arthroplasty including those with significant bone deficits.
These cases often involve the need for tendon transfers and allograft reconstruction for bony loss with custom prostheses.
With regard to the hand surgery experience, the fellow will be exposed to the latest techniques in arthroscopy, endoscopic carpal tunnel releases, congenital hand anomalies, nerve repairs and routine reconstructive hand surgery procedures dealing with Dupuytren’s contracture, arthritis, and trauma.
There are opportunities for clinical and basic science research, anatomical dissections are available through the CPMC SimSurg surgical educational center. Industry sponsors opportunities for both arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures. The fellows are expected to assist as lab instructors and master the techniques being presented when the meetings are local.
The fellow is expected to prepare a publication quality research papers in conjunction with the activities involved in the fellowship. The fellowship is recognized through the graduate medical education department of California Pacific Medical Center. There are research opportunities through the UC Berkeley Department of Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering under the direction of Lisa Pruit, PhD, the Director, Medical Polymers and Biomaterials Group.
This fellowship is a part of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Fellowship match program. It will not qualify fellows to take this certificate of added qualifications for hand surgery. Interviews are posted through the ASES match or may be arranged by appointment.
