Goals and Characteristics

The Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital will provide exposure to the nonoperative and operative treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders to include primary and revision arthroscopic and open reconstructive surgery for traumatic, athletic, and degenerative conditions in patients of all ages.  The fellowship will include a high volume of shoulder arthroplasty and advanced arthroscopy.  Approximately 2500 shoulder and elbow surgeries are performed per year.  Outpatient experience will be gathered in the Beaumont Orthopaedic Center and the private offices.  The fellow will be required to complete one clinical and one laboratory research project worthy of publication by the end of the fellowship year.  Time will be set aside for the completion of this work.  The fellow will conduct basic research in the Harold W. Gehring Orthopaedic Biomechanics and Implant Retrieval Analysis Laboratory, located on-campus in the Research Institute.  Full-service animal surgical facilities are available.  In addition, the fellow will have access to a 12-station MTS total joint wear simulator that has been modified to test shoulder prostheses.  Fellows can practice new surgical procedures and technologies outside of the operating room in the world-class Applebaum Surgical Learning Center.

Teaching responsibilities will include the supervision of residents and medical students on the Shoulder and Elbow Service as well as direction of a monthly journal club and a weekly didactic shoulder and elbow conference.  The fellow typically attends two or more national meetings per year.  Goals of the fellowship include the development of surgical skills in the full spectrum of shoulder and elbow surgery, contribution to the current body of knowledge through research, and development of a life-long love of teaching.  Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be well prepared to enter private practice or academics.  William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is a 1,061 bed university-affiliated tertiary referral and Level I trauma center in southeastern Michigan. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery includes over 40 specialists and sub-specialists, all board-certified, and encompasses every field in orthopaedic surgery.  The department includes a fully accredited residency program with 25 residents (5 per year for 5 years), and accredited fellowship programs in Spine, Hip and Knee Reconstruction, and Sports Medicine.

Prospective applicants must have completed an accredited orthopaedic surgery residency program, be board-eligible or board-certified, and have a Michigan state medical license before the fellowship begins.
