Fellowship Description:
This fellowship is a one year experience on the Shoulder Service, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas during which the Fellows will develop a rational approach to the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders. The Fellows will function as faculty members with the title of Clinical Instructor, participate in the teaching of medical students and residents, and have ample opportunity to be involved in clinical and basic research projects. The Fellows will have the option of taking trauma call.
Fellowship time is divided among 3 Full Time Staff (Dr. Rockwood, Dr. Wirth, and Dr. Dutta). The fellowship focuses on clinical and surgical education in the arenas of shoulder arthroplasty, shoulder arthroscopy, shoulder trauma, humerus trauma, elbow trauma, elbow arthroplasty, elbow arthroscopy. The Fellows rotate 6 months on Dr. Wirth’s team and 6 months on Dr. Dutta’s team and attend out-patient office hours with Dr. Rockwood. Each fellow is also assigned an indigent care clinic (Carelink) and a VA clinic to run with faculty supervision. The fellows rotate with the faculty private clinics and surgical schedules.
University Hospital is also the Level I Trauma Center for San Antonio and 22 counties to the Mexican border. Fellows also participate in activities at the Brooke Army Medical Center and the Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center.
This program is part of the ASES Fellow selection process. Interviews will be conducted between October 15 and December 15.
