Goals and characteristics:
This fellowship is designed to train candidates for a career in shoulder and elbow surgery. It will provide experience in shoulder and elbow disorders with optional training in sports-related and/or hand subspecialties. The fellows will work on the Shoulder and Elbow service for at least nine months. Additionally, three months can be used for an optional rotation in research, sports, hand or to continue on the shoulder and elbow service. Operative experience includes arthroscopic and advanced reconstructive cases including arthroplasty, arthrodesis, muscle transfers, revision surgery, and shoulder trauma. Approximately thirty percent of the operative volume involves specifically the elbow.
The fellow will be a member of the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine with an appointment as instructor. The Washington University facility includes the new Center for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery with clinical space for outpatient visits, radiology, research, and fellow office space. There is access to a new arthroscopy wet lab with two stations equipped to perform cadaveric shoulder and/or elbow arthroscopic procedures, as well as a state of the art conference facility. The fellow can anticipate independent activity conducting Adult Upper Extremity Clinics or VA Shoulder and Elbow Clinics, and operating on Barnes-Jewish Hospital emergency or VA cases. Activities include weekly indications conference, weekly didactic lectures, an anatomical dissection program, and monthly journal club. Participation in research projects is encouraged. Clinical experience will provide shoulder and elbow training and opportunities to contribute to the educational program for residents and medical students. This program is part of the ASES fellows selection process. We currently participate in the ASES match. Interviews will be conducted between October 15 and December 1.
