Fellowship Description:
The Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Columbia University was started by Dr. Charles Neer in 1977 and then directed by Dr. Louis Bigliani from 1990 until 2014. Dr. William Levine then assumed the helm and continues in that role today. The Columbia shoulder and elbow faculty has trained hundreds of national and international leaders in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery including 14 prior ASES Presidents, many current Shoulder and elbow fellowship directors as well as chairmen of orthopedic departments. In 2018, we divided the fellowship into 2 tracks – the Shoulder and elbow track (1 fellow matches in the ASES match), further enhancing the long tradition of shoulder and elbow surgery at Columbia; and a sports medicine track (1 fellow who matches in the AOSSM match). Accordingly, the shoulder and elbow fellow focuses solely on shoulder and elbow surgery while the sports fellow focuses on all aspects of sports medicine. The shoulder and elbow fellowship is a non-ACGME accredited position as part of the ASES SF match and has 1 position each year.
Operative experience includes advanced shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, primary shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, complex revision shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, throwing athlete’s shoulder and elbow surgery, and all shoulder and elbow trauma. In addition, there is extensive experience in pediatric and adolescent shoulder and elbow sports medicine procedures. The annual surgical volume of the Shoulder and Elbow division typically includes over 1900 shoulder procedures and 300 elbow procedures. The fellow is credentialed as an attending at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and as such, schedules and performs independent surgery as the year progresses.
A state-of-the-art 4-station arthroscopy laboratory in addition to an extensive arthroscopy core curriculum ensures the fellows’ ongoing education and development of surgical skills. The Fellow spends a ½ day per week in the private office to hone clinical decision-making skills and also supervise the residents and medical students in a weekly shoulder, elbow and sports medicine clinic.
The Fellows have a full day per week dedicated to academic pursuits. During this time they participate in translational research in the Biomechanics or Molecular Biology Section in the Carroll Laboratories, complete clinical research studies, and are expected to publish a minimum of 2 research project during the year. The Fellows are always invited to assist in the preparation of invited manuscripts, book chapters, and on-line projects. Mentorship, career development, and a lifetime connection to the remarkable Columbia legacy are key components of the fellowship.
