ASES Foundation

Frederick C. Ewald, MD

In addition to being a founding member of the ASES, Dr. Fred Ewald was also a founding member of the Knee Society, and it’s sixth President in 1989-90. He retired in 1999 after thirty years as Orthopedic Surgeon at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Harvard Medical School. During that time, he was the designer/ co-designer of fourteen implanted total joint prosthesis for the elbow, hip, and knee which included the Capitello-Condylar total elbow and the Kinemax total knee.

Of some interest to the ASES is the history of the logo tie which was designed in l984. Seen here is the first prototype next to an updated design, which replaced the prototype for many years.
