Louis U. Bigliani, MD

Past President of ASES: 1997-1998

Dr. Louis Bigliani spent three months as a fourth-year medical student with Dr. Charles S. Neer, II, and that experience motivated his career long interest in shoulder surgery. In 1977, Dr. Bigliani helped Dr. Neer found the Columbia Shoulder Clinic Fellowship and Service at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. After this fellowship, Dr. Bigliani joined the attending staff at Columbia and was Chief of the Shoulder Service from 1990 to 2013.

Some of the other Shoulder related positions Dr. Bigliani has held are: President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (1997- 1998); Founding Member, Board of Trustees Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Secretary (1990-1996), Chairman(2002-2005); Member of the international Board of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Secretary (2004-2010), President (2010-2016).

Researching and teaching shoulder surgery to improve patient care has been an important goal in Dr. Bigliani’s professional career.
