The Westin Kierland Resort is the official hotel for the 2023 Annual Meeting, and you are now able to book your room via our secure housing site by clicking the button below. Please note that while there are still rooms available for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, only a few rooms in our block remain for the night of October 3rd, and we are sold out for the night of October 7th. We are unable to add additional rooms at this time.

ASES Shoulder and Elbow Course for Resident and Fellows
On November 17-19, 2023, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons will be hosting the ASES 2023 Shoulder and Elbow Course for Residents and Fellows at the Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC) located in Rosemont, Illinois.
The course, chaired by Drs. Emilie Cheung, Eric Ricchetti, and Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo will offer a review of the principles of shoulder and elbow anatomy and help residents and fellows further their skills and gain mastery of surgical approaches and procedures of the shoulder and elbow. Registrants must be current residents or fellows during the 2023-2024 year.
Attendees will learn essential procedures of the shoulder and elbow through hands-on lab instruction, case discussions, and podium presentations by renowned ASES faculty. The many topics and procedures covered will include:
- Resident Case Competitions
- Shoulder Instability
- Rotator Cuff Lab & Cases
- Arthroscopic Bankart and Posterior Labrum Repair
- Diagnostic Elbow
- Anatomic and Reverse TSA and much more.
The Course will kick off with an informal meet and greet reception with faculty on Friday evening. Please plan your travel accordingly.

JSES PubMed Central Announcement
The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Family of Journals received very good news in early August. JSES Reviews, Reports, and Techniques (RRT) has been accepted for indexing by PubMed Central. This means that JSES RRT is now indexed on the three portals for which it is eligible – PubMed Central, Scopus (an Elsevier search product), and DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals).
PubMed Central is for open access journals but this means that all JSES RRT content will be indexed on PubMed, as PubMed Central is considered a “backdoor” to PubMed. Further, this indexing will be retroactive, so that any publications in the first 3 years of the journal (late 2020-2023) will be listed and accessible as well.
The current status of our Family of Journals indexing is that JSES is listed everywhere, including Medline, Scopus, and with Clarivate and has an impact factor.
JSES International is listed with PubMed Central, Scopus, and DOAJ. Their application for an impact factor has been with Clarivate since late 2022, but it can take up to 2 years to get processed so we hope to know something later this year.
Seminars in Arthroplasty JSES is listed on Scopus and applied to Medline for indexing approval in March 2022. Medline is the access point for Seminars since it is a subscription journal and is not eligible for PubMed Central. We hope to hear something soon.
A large part of the success of JSES RRT is due to the great work of its editors-in-chief, Ed Craig and John Sperling, and their team of Associate Editors, and we congratulate them. Onward and upwards for the JSES Family of Journals.

JSES Reviewers Needed
ASES Members:
Recently we have been having more and more trouble with obtaining reviewers for JSES articles. We think that some of this is related to difficulties with emails getting through to the reviewers. This is because many universities, medical centers, and clinical practices have now made it more difficult to get outside emails into your systems.
Also, because many of you have been in the Elsevier / JSES system for several years, some of your emails may not be up-to-date. In the past, if that was the case, it was easy for me or our managing editor (Jill Shepherd) to go into the Editorial Manager (EM) and change the email. We can no longer do this because of European privacy regulations (GDPR), which have forced Elsevier to limit what we can do to the system.
So to help us out, we are asking you to do two (2) things, if possible:
- Please go into the EM website (https://www.editorialmanager.com/jses/default2.aspx) and be certain your email is fully up-to-date;
- and Please go into your own medical center, hospital, or practice systems and un-block or whitelist emails coming from Elsevier, specifically coming from em@editorialmanager.com.

We are thrilled to announce that the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons’ first Shoulder and Elbow self-assessment exam for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is now available for purchase. The $60 exam is available for ASES Members and Non-Members.
The 100-question scored online examination helps fulfill the SAE requirements for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC). The examination has been curated by a team of expert shoulder and elbow surgeons, all of whom are ASES members. Each question is followed by a detailed explanation and supported by current references. Earn 10 SAE and CME credits with a passing score of 70% or higher (The exam can be retaken until a passing score is attained.)

Apply Now for the 2024 Asian Exchange Fellowship Program
The three to four-week Asian exchange fellowship will begin in the fall of 2024. Applicants must be no more than 10 years out of their fellowship as of December 31, 2023, practicing in the United States or Canada, board-eligible, or certified orthopaedic surgeons with a special interest and experience in shoulder and elbow research and patient care.
The application deadline is November 30th, 2023.
Exchange Fellowship Application
2024 Traveling Fellows will receive the following benefits:
- Eligibility for an ASES Research Grant.
- All travel and hotel expenses will be covered and fellows will receive a small stipend after travel has been completed.
- After your traveling fellowship is complete, submit a testimonial to the ASES office which will be included on the ASES website as well as communicated through the monthly newsletter to members.

Young Scholars Memorial Fellowship Award
The Young Scholars Memorial Fellowship Award is a new international award to promote an enriching and supportive climate that shines a spotlight on brilliant young shoulder and elbow surgeons and encourages the pursuit of academic excellence and involvement. This award is to be given out annually to “young scholars,” defined as shoulder/elbow surgeons in their first (5) years of clinical practice or Shoulder & Elbow Fellows. This award was created to honor some of the young shoulder & elbow surgeons we have lost prematurely, including Doug Harryman, Alexandra “Sandy” Kirkley, Birgit Werner, Stefano Carbone, and Dominik Meyer.
Two awards will be given annually and will provide the recipient $1500.00 USD to assist with their attendance at the ASES Annual Meeting. One award will be specifically targeted each year to enhance diversity in our specialty. This is an international award and is open to all nationalities.
Applications for this scholarship are due by Dec 1st. The application is available here.

More than $500,000 in Research Funding Available from OREF!
OREF is pleased to announce up to $520,000 in funding opportunities. Grant applications are now available for Career Development, New Investigator, and Trauma research as well as support for NIH K Award recipients and a new fellowship opportunity for residents. Grants from $20,000 to $300,000 are available to eligible applicants.
ABOS MOC Modifications
The Board of Directors of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), after careful consideration and in keeping with its mission and vision, has modified the ABOS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. The changes will be effective beginning January 1, 2024, and are meant to provide an ABOS MOC Program that is meaningful and valuable to ABOS Diplomates. The modifications will help to advance the ABOS’ mission to ensure the safe, ethical, and effective practice of orthopaedic surgery for the benefit of our patients and the public. In addition, these changes meet new Standards for Continuing Certification from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
