Presidential Message from John (Jed) E. Kuhn, MD
My fellow ASES Members,
As summer fades into the fall, I hope you and yours are well.
As you all know, our annual meeting from October 16th-19th in San Antonio is fast approaching.
It looks like this year’s meeting will be extremely well-attended. We are already way ahead of our projected registration numbers to date. This means that if you have not done so already, you should register for the meeting and secure your hotel room as soon as possible. We would hate for you to have to stay off site! Early bird registration ends September 1st, after which the price will increase- so go online and register today!
The program is extraordinary! You will see award-winning, practice-changing research, great debates, sessions on Virtual Reality, and symposia on the latest and greatest products from our industry partners. The social program will be amazing as well, with special events for women in shoulder and elbow surgery, candidate members, mentors and mentees, and fun events for every member of the Society. Bring your boots and come prepared to enjoy Texas at the Buckhorn Bash at the Texas Ranger Museum with the Lucchese pop-up shop! Thanks to Angela Orlando, Carolyn Hettrich, Mike Khazzam, Edwin Spencer, and Shannon Lykowski who have worked tirelessly to create a fantastic meeting!
Thanks to all of our members who donated experiences and items for our ASES Foundation Fundraising Auction. We will have a live auction at the Neer Circle Dinner for a few of the items, and the rest will be auctioned through a silent auction during the meeting. You will soon receive more information on the items available and how to bid! Special thanks to Eric Black, Joe Abboud, and Paul Sethi for all your work. I think you will be surprised at the quality of the items available, and how much fun this auction will be while raising funds for our Foundation’s mission.
It is very important that you download the ASES 365 app. The app has many features, but it will be particularly useful during the annual meeting. You can review the annual meeting program and create your personal schedule. As an active member, you can currently nominate candidates for consideration for the ASES Nominating Committee (deadline September 6). You will then be directed to vote on the candidates for the ASES Nominating Committee using the app before the meeting (those elected will be announced at the Annual Meeting). You will need the app to approve some bylaw changes (see below). In addition, there will be spontaneous surveys during the educational programming that will require the app to participate. So please download and set up the app today!
As mentioned above the ASES Executive Committee is recommending a few changes to the bylaws. You will soon receive an email detailing these changes. In short these include:
- Increasing the potential duration of Candidate Membership from 5 to 8 years
- Add the designation and criteria for entry for the Neer Circle into the current bylaws
- Add representatives from the ASES Foundation and the JSES Family of Journals as ex-officio non-voting members to the ASES Executive Committee
- Charge the Nominating Committee with the task of replacing the ASES Foundation Chair and Secretary-Treasurer when their terms expire.
Please look for the emails which describe why these changes are recommended and be prepared to vote on them using the ASES 365 app!
One deadline to keep in mind: The Young Scholars Memorial Fellowship Award provides the recipient $1500.00 USD to assist with their attendance at the ASES Annual Meeting. One award will be specifically targeted each year to enhance diversity in our specialty. This is an international award and is open to all nationalities. The deadline is September 1. Please contact Steve Mlodoch (smlodoch@ases-assn.org) for more information.
Finally, over the last year, representatives from your society have been working hard on charting a course and setting goals for our Society for the next five years. There are a lot of exciting things coming down the pike for our members. We hope to detail these at the annual meeting as well!
Thanks for all you do!

Spotlight on San Antonio
Volume 7: The Legendary Riverwalk
The San Antonio River Walk:
A Historic and Vibrant Destination
The San Antonio River Walk, or Paseo del Río, is one of the most enchanting urban waterways in the United States. Its history is a tale of vision, resilience, and transformation.
Early Beginnings: The San Antonio River, which runs through downtown San Antonio, Texas, has been a vital part of the city since its founding in 1718. The river was integral to the early Spanish settlers, providing water for agriculture and acting as a natural barrier for defense.
Mid-20th Century Revitalization: In the 1920s, San Antonio faced the challenge of urban sprawl and a neglected riverfront. The turning point came in 1929 when the city commissioned a comprehensive plan to revitalize the area. Architect Robert H.H. Hugman is credited with the original design concept that laid the foundation for what we now know as the River Walk. His vision was to transform the riverbanks into a scenic, pedestrian-friendly environment that would boost the city’s appeal and economy.
Post-World War II Era: The River Walk’s transformation took a significant leap in the 1950s and 1960s, with efforts to enhance its aesthetic appeal and functionality. The development of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues along the riverbank attracted both locals and tourists. Over the decades, continuous improvements have made it a premier destination.
Things to Do on the San Antonio River Walk
1. Stroll the Scenic Pathways: The River Walk stretches over 15 miles, offering a picturesque walk along the river. You can enjoy lush landscaping, charming footbridges, and beautiful fountains. The pathways meander through the heart of downtown, past historic buildings and modern attractions.
2. Riverboat Tours: For a different perspective, hop on a riverboat tour. These guided tours offer insightful commentary about the River Walk’s history, architecture, and the surrounding landmarks. They are a relaxing way to take in the beauty of the area.
3. Dining and Shopping: The River Walk is lined with a diverse range of dining options, from upscale restaurants to casual eateries. Enjoy a meal with a view of the river, or explore the many boutiques and souvenir shops. Highlights include the historic Casa Rio, known for its Mexican cuisine, and the Alamo Candy Company for a sweet treat.
4. Visit Historic Landmarks: Several historic sites are located near the River Walk, including the Alamo, just a short walk away. The Spanish Governor’s Palace and the San Fernando Cathedral are also nearby, offering a glimpse into San Antonio’s rich history.
5. Enjoy Festivals and Events: The River Walk is a hub of cultural activities. Throughout the year, the area hosts a variety of festivals and events, including the Fiesta San Antonio, which features parades, live music, and vibrant celebrations. The Christmas light display is particularly popular, transforming the area into a festive wonderland.
6. Relax at Parks and Gardens: Take a break from the urban buzz by visiting nearby parks and gardens. The Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair offers a tranquil space with play areas, fountains, and green spaces, perfect for a family outing.
7. Explore the Museum Reach: This northern section of the River Walk connects to the San Antonio Museum of Art and the historic Pearl Brewery. It’s a great area to explore art collections, enjoy culinary delights, and learn more about San Antonio’s cultural heritage.
8. Participate in Water Activities: During the warmer months, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the river at your own pace. It’s a fun and active way to experience the River Walk.
The San Antonio River Walk is more than just a scenic pathway; it’s a dynamic blend of history, culture, and leisure. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or someone looking to enjoy a relaxing stroll, the River Walk offers a rich array of experiences that capture the spirit of San Antonio. From its historical roots to its modern-day vibrancy, the River Walk remains a cherished gem in Texas’s cultural landscape.

On behalf of the ASES Foundation and the Board of Trustees, we present to you our reprinting of this classic book by the man who made the first and the most lasting imprint on our field. Ernest Amory Codman’s The Shoulder: Rupture of the Supraspinatus Tendon and Other Lesions In or About the Subacromial Bursa has been, is now, and will always be a must read and a constant reference for those individuals who have any interest in the field of shoulder. At the prompting of Bill Mallon and Carl Basamania, we have indexed the entire book for greater ease of reference.
