ASES News – December

ASES News - November 2024

Presidential Message from Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, MD, PhD

Dear ASES Members:

Hard to believe for many, including me, that the end of 2024 is already here! December is a month to reflect and enjoy all the good things that happened this year, and also to gear up for a new and exciting 2025.

In this monthly message, I thought I would summarize educational opportunities that will be conducted in 2025 by American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons, with many of you as participants (Faculty, attendees or contributors in other ways). As you will see, every month there is at least one face to face or online ASES program for the benefit of our members and other individuals interested in shoulder and elbow care. Hopefully this information will help you organize your time so that you can enjoy what ASES has to offer.

Specialty Day. Traditionally, American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons holds an open educational meeting at the same time and location of the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In 2025, ASES will join efforts with the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). The combined ASES-AANA program will be held in a single auditorium from 7:00 to 10:30 am PST. Each Society will then run a parallel program from 11:00 am to 1:30 PST. Only one registration is required to participate in all sessions by both Societies, depending on your interests. Remember that you can already register here, where you can also review the scientific program created under the leadership of Drs. Ciccone, Spiker, Frank and O’Brien as Co-Chairs.

Mentor-Mentee Program. A joint effort between the ASES Early Career Engagement and Mentorship Subcommittee and the ASES Foundation, this is a program where ASES members who volunteer to serve as mentors get together with individuals who applied to be mentored. Education is centered around practice management, research infrastructure, leadership opportunities, and similar topics. Every year, a Mentor Mentee Meeting is conducted in partnership with one device company, and for 2025 we are very grateful that Catalyst has offered their support for this meeting.

National Shoulder & Elbow Week. Another activity organized by the American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons Foundation, this is a great opportunity to bring awareness to the public beyond our members of the importance of shoulder and elbow health. Please visit our website to learn more about activities conducted simultaneously in several locations (Baltimore, Gainesville, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Antonio and St Louis) as an opportunity for networking, collaboration, collegiality and fund-raising.

Revision Shoulder Arthroplasty Course. This will be the first edition of a brand-new Course directed by Drs. Surena Namdari and Vahid Entezari. ASES members know that revision of failed shoulder arthroplasty is expected to become an increasingly common procedure, and our Society is positioned to be at the forefront of education as it relates to failed shoulder arthroplasty. In the words of Drs. Namdari and Entezari, “This immersive two-day event is designed for surgeons with shoulder arthroplasty experience who are eager to take their revision skills to the next level. Attendees will learn from world-renowned arthroplasty surgeons through an engaging curriculum that covers every aspect of revision arthroplasty, including preoperative planning and cadaver laboratory sessions featuring all major implant systems.” ASES members, please note that this is a cadaver-based course to be held at Five Labs in Atlanta, and attendance will be limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration will open early next year, stay tuned!

Fellows’ Day. For years, ASES has partnered with the San Diego Shoulder Institute to hold a one-day program where fellows about to graduate can present their favorite research project of the year and listen to the sage advice of selected ASES members. This represents and incredible opportunity to help our fellows transition into independent practice and remain connected with ASES after graduation. Best paper and best posters are awarded the Hawkins Fellow and Cofield Fellow Award. ASES partners with industry for scholarship funding and fellow attendees are also invited by SDSI to attend the whole San Diego Shoulder Course for free. If you are ASES member and will be attending the SDSI Course, please consider attending the ASES Fellows’ Day as well!

Annual Meeting. In October 2025, we will all get together at the beautiful Gaylord Pacific waterfront property in San Diego. We truly want to reimagine our premier educational event to add experiential and networking opportunities to a robust cutting-edge educational program. Drs. Jonathan Barlow and Robert Hartzler are already working hard on each and every aspect of the annual meeting. Please mark your calendars to come to the one event of the year when we all have the chance to get together as an organization. You will not be disappointed!

Shoulder & Elbow Course for Residents and Fellows. November is the perfect time of the year to provide a unique cadaver-based educational experience to our own fellows as well as those residents interested in shoulder and elbow surgery. This course is limited in numbers due to the need to use cadaveric laboratory stations, and the 2024 edition was sold-out and a complete success. If you are interested in watching some testimonials from the 2024 edition, they are available here. The next edition will be directed by Drs. Gupta, Keener and Muh, and will again take place at the OLC Education and Learning Center in Rosemont, IL.

Webinars. Throughout the year, ASES offers webinars that can be watched livestream but also remain as enduring recorded educational content. For 2025, Drs. Wagner and Klifto have scheduled Virtual Journal Club Webinars on bone blocks for shoulder instability, complications of proximal humerus fractures, rotator cuff augmentation, and complications of elbow trauma. Drs. Sperling and Kassam will moderate Practice Management Webinars on efficiency in clinic and the operating room, financial investment, and branding/social media/credibility. Similarly, Dr. Rodeo and Mr. Simon will moderate Research Webinars on how to conduct randomized clinical trials, develop a clinician-scientist career, and establish a biospecimen repository. All these topics are so timely and great, I can’t wait to watch them all!

Finally, I would like to wish all ASES members, a wonderful Holiday season filled with joy in the company of your loved ones. Hopefully, all of you can disconnect from work a little and enjoy those other domains of our lives that we some time neglect: family, friends, and personal recovery.

Respectfully yours,

Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo MD PhD

April: New ASES 365 App Launched!

May: The ASES Foundation's

2024 National Shoulder & Elbow Week

Reflecting on Eight Incredible Events!

From Salt Lake City to Boston, it was truly inspiring to see how we came together to honor the incredible advancements and innovations in shoulder and elbow care for NSEW 2024 back in May.

2024 Events:

West Palm Beach, FL

Denver, CO

Asheville, NC

Lexington, KY

Boston, MA

Buffalo, NY

Phoenix, AZ

Salt Lake City, UT

Each event was unique in the way it displayed the dedication and passion of our surgeons, researchers, industry partners, and patients. The lively discussions and hands-on demonstrations provided special opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate our shared commitment to advancing patient care.

The time and energy it took to hold these incredible events is reflected in the $840,000+ total funds raised, with $750,000 from sponsors and donations alone. The 1370 attendees across all eight events is a testament to the growing impact and reach into our local communities.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making National Shoulder and Elbow Week 2024 a resounding success, including the hosts, attendees, and our sponsors. Together, we are shaping the future of shoulder and elbow surgery.

June: 2024 ASES Fellows' Day at SDSI

On Friday, June 14th, ASES held the 2024 Fellow’s Day at SDSI during the San Diego Shoulder Institute. Chaired by Drs. Justin Griffin and Andrew Sheean, this unique educational and networking event provided an opportunity for graduating fellows to present their research, further their orthopaedic knowledge, and interact with experts in the field.

Two awards were presented during this symposium. The Robert H. Cofield, MD, Award for Best Oral Presentation was presented to Kevin Wang, MD, while the Richard J. Hawkins, MD, Award for Best Poster Presentation went to Stephanie Boden, MD

Congratulations to Drs. Wang and Boden and their co-authors on excellent research projects, and thank you to all of our faculty and participating Fellows for their contribution to this important program!

October: Thank You for Attending the

ASES 2024 Annual Meeting!

Thank you to all who joined us in October in San Antonio for the 2024 Annual Meeting. From our stellar faculty to our engaged Industry Partners to our amazing member attendees, we achieved record-setting numbers on attendance, revenue and engagement

We are pleased that so many of you were able to attend, and from the feedback we have received we are confident that the meeting was a great success!

We look forward to capitalizing on this success and continuing to provide quality educational content to our members and guests.

October: Thank You for Supporting the ASES Foundation at the Annual Meeting!

This year’s Annual Meeting was a testament to the incredible generosity and commitment of our members, who continue to drive the ASES Foundation’s mission forward.

One of the highlights was recognizing the outstanding contributions of our members and leaders. Dr. Jonathan B. Ticker was honored with the Foundation Award for his exceptional leadership and commitment, which have been pivotal in advancing fundraising and programs supporting research, education, and early career professionals. Additionally, we introduced the inaugural Founders Legacy Awards, celebrating Dr. John Itamura, Dr. William Levine, Dr. Richard Friedman, and Dr. Anand Murthi for their remarkable work in Leadership, Service, Diversity, and Mentorship.

The meeting also marked a fundraising milestone with the Foundation’s first-ever auction. Thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of attendees, we raised an incredible $400,000 to support our mission. Highlights included a lively auction at the Neer Circle Dinner, a dedicated Paddle Raise for Multi-Centered Studies, and a silent auction with on-site donations.

November: ASES Hosts a Successful Shoulder and Elbow Course

for Residents and Fellows

Thank you to everyone who attended the SOLD OUT 2024 ASES Shoulder and Elbow Course for Residents and Fellows, held this November at the state-of-the-art OLC Education and Learning Center in Rosemont, IL. This annual event brought together aspiring orthopedic surgeons for a weekend of learning and collaboration.

Participants had the opportunity to dive deep into the essentials of shoulder and elbow surgery, engaging in a combination of hands-on labs and dynamic didactic sessions. Led by an exceptional faculty of renowned experts, the course delivered cutting-edge content and invaluable surgical insights tailored to the needs of Residents and Fellows.

We are proud to support the next generation of leaders in shoulder and elbow care and look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence in the years to come. Thank you to our attendees and faculty for making this event such a tremendous success!

December: The ASES Foundation

Wraps Up it's 40th Year!

In honor of the ASES Foundation’s 40th anniversary, we launched a special commemorative webpage to reflect on our remarkable journey, celebrate our accomplishments, and recognize the dedicated leadership that has shaped the Foundation over the past four decades. To mark this milestone, we set an ambitious fundraising goal of $400,000. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our members and the success of initiatives like the #Give40for40 campaign, National Shoulder & Elbow Week, and our mid-year and year-end appeals, we are on track to exceed expectations, closing the year with a record-breaking $700,000 in donations!

This year, we also prioritized educating our members about the Foundation’s mission and impact. Through awareness campaigns, including our first-ever promotional video featuring ASES member leaders, we highlighted how donations fuel research, education, and early career development. These efforts have built stronger connections with our members, fostering greater confidence in the work we do and the lasting impact of their contributions.

As we celebrate our success, we remain focused on giving back. In 2024, the Foundation allocated over $1 million in grants through programs like National Shoulder & Elbow Week and the Fellowship Education Grant. These funds will support the salaries and benefits of 35 fellows and advance research projects in the shoulder and elbow space, ensuring that we continue to elevate care and innovation in our field for years to come.
