ASES News - July 2024

Presidential Message from John (Jed) E. Kuhn, MD

My fellow members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons,

As we rapidly move through the summer months north of the equator, and the days start getting shorter, I am reminded that our annual meeting will be upon us before we know it!

A few things you all need to know about the annual meeting:

Be sure to download and set up the ASES 365 app from the app store of your choice. The ASES Nominating Committee represents the membership as they review candidates and chose who will lead our organization in the future. This year we will be soliciting candidates and voting on them using the app. You will see email reminders soon reviewing this process. Please be sure to get the app so you can have your voice heard! (while you are at it, you may want to go on our website and update your information-it is a great resource for patients to find the best shoulder and elbow surgeons in their region).

Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to serve at the meeting as a moderator, panelist or speaker. My meeting program co-chairs: Carolyn Hettrich, Mike Khazzam, and Edwin Spencer have produced a wonderful event! We have made a concerted effort to engage new people for the podium and have lively debates. The abstracts are of amazing quality, and we are excited to have our delegation from the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia! The instructional courses are also cutting-edge material (with the exception of my course on how to efficiently review a manuscript….As we all know reviewing for JSES is a requirement for membership and advancement of membership in our society!

We have some great industry partner events, including the opportunity to work in Virtual Reality with Precision OS, where our ASES ad hoc VR team is developing content. We are offering a Lab Course for our fellows on Wednesday during the Neer Circle Meeting, and Industry Workshops during Lunch on Thursday and Friday so you can try the latest and greatest implants. We are grateful to our industry partners who help us make the meeting terrific.

We also have tried to make new social and networking events which I think you will all enjoy. These include a Women in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Breakfast, a Candidate Member/ASES President Dinner, a Mentor/Mentee Happy Hour, the ASES Scholars Program for underrepresented medical students from the area to encourage them to be shoulder and elbow surgeons, and of course the ASES Buckhorn Bash held in the Texas Ranger Museum and Saloon! While the deadline has passed to pre-order your ASES Lucchese shirt, you will still be able to order one or even custom ASES cowboy boots on site at the Lucchese Pop-Up Shop at the Buckhorn Bash!

We will be raising funds for the ASES Foundation through a live auction at the Neer Circle Dinner and will be having a silent auction for those who cannot attend. Thanks to everyone who contributed items for the auction! I am amazed at the list of fantastic events and items our members have donated. I believe this will be a terrific addition to the meeting and should raise a lot of funds to help our Foundation with its mission!

Finally, we will be sharing the results of our Strategic Planning Session and our specific tasks and goals to keep the ASES moving forward for the next 5 years.

These are just the highlights of what promises to be an exceptional Annual Meeting!

Be sure to register and make your travel arrangements-you will not want to miss this one!

See you in a few months!

Jed

Advocacy Spotlight

Our ASES Political Action Committee continues to remain active in supporting initiatives to streamline and reduce the burden of prior authorization, curb annual Medicare physician reimbursement cuts, and support the allowance of physician owned/run hospitals.

Recent federal regulatory updates include a 2024 ruling by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to improve prior authorization processing (CMS-0057-F). This will apply to Medicare Advantage, State Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance Program Fee-for-Service programs and managed care plans. This ruling will require payers to implement a patient and provider application programming interface (API) by January 1, 2027 to streamline transparency regarding prior authorization denials. Furthermore, payers will be required to publicly disclose prior authorization policies as well as yearly metrics on their website by March 31, 2026. More information can be found here.

Please consider supporting your PAC (AAOS PAC), even a small amount goes a long way; we as a society maintain strength in our numbers.

A Great Gift for Your Fellow or Resident!

Show your appreciation to your residents and fellows with a gift of

E.A. Codman’s “The Shoulder”.

Get and Give--Net Proceeds are a Donation in Your Name to The ASES Foundation!

On behalf of the ASES Foundation and the Board of Trustees, we present to you our reprinting of this classic book by the man who made the first and the most lasting imprint on our field. Ernest Amory Codman’s The Shoulder: Rupture of the Supraspinatus Tendon and Other Lesions In or About the Subacromial Bursa has been, is now, and will always be a must read and a constant reference for those individuals who have any interest in the field of shoulder. At the prompting of Bill Mallon and Carl Basamania, we have indexed the entire book for greater ease of reference. As Codman wrote in the Autobiographic Preface, “And now this book is presented to you as a final illustration of my life work, rather than as a monograph on the shoulder.” It is our hope that this book will find its way into private and public libraries to allow for a deeper appreciation of the shoulder, and of EA Codman. 100% of the proceeds will support the ASES Foundation and its programs.

Note: $425 of the purchase price is recorded as a donation in your name to The ASES Foundation.
