ASES News – December 2021

ASES News -December 2021

The relationship between the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the subspecialty societies is in a state of evolution. There are 23 Specialty Societies that participate in the Board of Specialties of the AAOS. The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons began 39 years ago in 1982. All the societies began with a small core group of interested individuals and have expanded over the years to reflect the growing interest in those subspecialty areas. The AAOS has over 39,000 members in total. ASES had approximately 200 members when I joined over 20 years ago and we now number over 1200. The AAOS initially provided administrative support for the specialty societies but in 2019, made the decision to disengage from management of the specialty societies as the societies were large enough and mature enough to manage their own organizations.

Although this transition of administration has been both challenging and difficult, I believe it has been desirable for both the specialty societies and the Academy. These changes have allowed us to control our staffing needs better and become more nimble in executing our mission. It has allowed us to streamline our finances and create a more strategic approach to our investments and flow of money through the Society, Foundation, and Journal.

We find ourselves in a somewhat federated model in which we are members of both the ASES and the AAOS. This may lead to questions of divided loyalty and of mission and may lead some of us to wonder why we remain members of both. While the focus of ASES is to advance shoulder and elbow surgery, the Academy has a much broader focus. There is no doubt that there is strength in numbers. The Academy speaks for all orthopedic surgeons and has been instrumental especially in Advocacy. Over the past several years, our Academy has been working hard for all orthopedic surgeons to protect patient access to specialty medicine, remove barriers to timely access to care placed by prior authorization, deal with surprise billing issues and preserve the right to fair negotiation. Orthopedic research funding has been prioritized and during the pandemic, the Academy has worked to expand telemedicine and help gain reimbursement for this method of patient care delivery. These are but a few of the efforts our Academy provides for us and many of the successes obtained are due to the fact that we are such a large organization. As they say, size matters. Insurance companies would like nothing more than to see the Academy divided into smaller, less effective groups which could be more easily defeated in the above-stated arenas. Continued participation in the AAOS is therefore important for all orthopaedic surgeons including sub-specialists.

Despite these advantages to membership in the Academy, challenges remain. Many of our ASES members are also interested in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy and current Specialty Day scheduling conflicts often preclude the ability to participate in more than 1 of these sessions. This affects both presenters and course participants. We have spoken to the Academy about this and have made them aware of our desire to remediate this conflict.

In addition, the question of ownership of intellectual property is one that has become increasingly discussed. Over the years our ASES member have been the prime creators of intellectual content in shoulder and elbow surgery especially in the areas of arthroplasty. The Academy has provided a forum for this dissemination of knowledge through the development of the Orthopedic Learning Center, the Annual Academy meeting, multiple cosponsored meetings throughout the year as well as the production of printed and virtual learning tools. There is no doubt however that the source of the content of these materials is found in our society. As we redefine our relationship with the Academy, discussions regarding the management of this intellectual property remains a priority. These are challenging questions regarding cobranding, licensure of content and repackaging of intellectual property for sale. As we redefine our relationship to the Academy, your ASES leadership is bringing these issues to their attention for discussion.

In closing, we are all Orthopaedic Surgeons, and it is in our interest to support the AAOS. Your ASES leadership will continue to work with the Academy to optimize our ability to coordinate educational activities and improve shoulder and elbow care for our patients.

ASES seeks an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery

The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), a professional medical association, seeks an Editor-in-Chief (“EIC”) of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES) for its JSES Family of Journals. The EIC will lead one of the most prestigious sub-specialty journals in orthopaedics.

The Opportunity

The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) will provide editorial direction for JSES, the main Journal of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, by selecting editors and other key staff, providing guidance, and defining editorial goals. The EIC will review and evaluate manuscripts to ensure scientific integrity and originality, select a large and diverse pool of qualified reviewers who can conduct fair and timely reviews of manuscripts, and oversee the submission of manuscripts and final acceptance decisions. The EIC will ensure the quality, relevance, and integrity of content and will protect and strengthen the integrity and quality of JSES and its processes, policies, and procedures. EIC will interface with the Executive Publisher and publishing staff to meet the current and to establish future needs of the publication and will set and pursue short- and long-term goals to ensure viability of JSES. The EIC will also work with the Executive Editor of the JSES Family of Journals, who will serve and assist the EIC with JSES.

JSES has been published since 1991, beginning with 6 issues/year. It went to 8 issues/year in 2010 and 12 issues/year in 2012. It also publishes special issues on an ad hoc basis. JSES has been indexed with an Impact Factor since the mid-1990s. Its Impact Factor has steadily risen since that time, ranking it in the top 20 orthopaedic journals world-wide.
