ASES News – November 2024

ASES News - November 2024

Presidential Message from Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, MD, PhD

Dear ASES Members:

One of the most amazing realizations while serving on the ASES Executive Committee has been to comprehend how much voluntary work is completed year after year by our ASES committee members. The first few weeks of this cycle have been dedicated to meetings with Committee Chairs and reviewing the content of the new strategic plan. We are creating lists of actionable items for each committee, including items that require collaboration amongst committees.

This month, I would like to share with all members the general lines of the new ASES strategic plan, highlight the recent ASES Residents and Fellows Course, and remind all members to register for the Specialty Day meeting.

2024-2025 ASES Strategic Plan. Crafting our new Strategic Plan was a very insightful activity led by Immediate Past President Dr. Kuhn with the help of selected ASES members and an outside firm. Our plan includes four pillars:

(1) Enhance member engagement and value

(2) Lead and promote excellence in shoulder and elbow education

(3) Foster high-impact research and advocate for high quality patient care

(4) Optimize the effectiveness and sustainability of our organization

The strategic plan is very detailed, with many specific action items, deliverables, owners and deadlines. As an ASES member, you can view the entire plan in the members-only section of the ASES website. In addition, the general aspects of this plan were summarized in this video. Please keep our strategic plan in mind as you continue to contribute to our mission.

2024 ASES Course for Residents and Fellows. Last week, Drs. Emilie Cheung and Ranjan Gupta co-chaired this year’s edition of the Annual ASES Course for Residents & Fellows. Unique features of this course included an in-depth discussion of the basics, multiple formats (including case-based presentations and working lunches), great hands-on experience (with cadaver specimens and surgical implants), and deliberate opportunities for networking. The course was sold out! We were able to host 56 attendees (13 fellows and 43 residents); 4 of the attendees participated under a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) scholarship specific to the Residents and Fellows Course.

I would like to thank all faculty members who donated their time, expertise and skills to help educate our new generation of residents and fellows. Since I had the chance to

participate in this course, I can tell you that the level of energy, engagement and fulfillment I witnessed are really worth the effort. Special thanks to our industry partners (in alphabetic order): Arthrex, Enovis, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, and Stryker that provided the highest level of support, recognized by their spotlight presentations. Exactech provided additional financial support, and there was also some in-kind support provided by ConMed, Innomed, Medacta, Smith+Nephew, and Zimmer Biomet.

2025 Specialty Day. On March 14th 2025, ASES will partner with the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) for a combined educational program in San Diego, with Drs. Ciccone, Spiker, Frank and O’Brien as Co-Chairs. The combined ASES-AANA program will be held in a single auditorium from 7:00 to 10:30 am PST. Each Society will then run a parallel program from 11:00 am to 1:30 PST. Only one registration is required to participate in all sessions by both Societies, depending on your interests. Registration is now open. Consider registering today!

Words of gratitude. November is a very special month, with Thanksgiving reminding us of the importance of gratitude. I am so thankful to our patients, who place their trust in our hands when they come for a consultation or undergo surgery. I am also very thankful to each and every member of our professional society: together, as a big ASES family, we find ways to help our patients, provide resources to our members, and contribute to a better society. And importantly, as all of you, I am very grateful for my family, who understands and supports the effort and time required to accomplish all we try to do, oftentimes taking the back seat.

I would like to wish all of you a wonderful time during the Thanksgiving holiday we are about to enjoy. I hope that all of you will have the opportunity to spend time with your loved ones.

Take inventory of all the gifts you have received, personally and professionally, with bliss and gratitude in the center of our lives.

Respectfully yours,

Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo MD PhD

Deadline Fast Approaching to Apply for the

2025 SECEC Exchange Fellowship Program

“My traveling fellowship was the most formative month of my training so far. I gained valuable insights into various techniques, practices, and the nuances of different healthcare systems and patient management approaches. Some consistent themes focused on shoulder and elbow care, including the latest in bone loss management for shoulder instability, advancements in reverse TSA, and the best options for rotator cuff repair. I’ve integrated many of these learnings into my current practice, and not a day goes by where my time in Europe doesn’t shape the care I provide.” Jonathan Barlow, MD – 2023 SECEC Traveling Fellow

“When I look back, I’m confident this will stand out as one of the most important milestones in my career.” Peter Chalmers, MD – 2023 SECEC Traveling Fellow

The three to four-week SECEC exchange fellowship will be in September/October of 2025. Applicants must be no more than 10 years out of their fellowship as of December 31, 2024, practicing in the United States or Canada, board-eligible, or certified orthopaedic surgeons with a special interest and experience in shoulder and elbow research and patient care.

The application deadline is November 30th, 2024.

2025 Traveling Fellows will receive the following benefits:

  • Eligibility for an ASES Research Grant.
  • All travel and hotel expenses will be covered and fellows will receive a small stipend after completion of travel.
  • After completing your traveling fellowship, submit a testimonial to the ASES office, which will be included on the ASES website and communicated through the monthly newsletter to members.

For any further questions or assistance, contact the ASES office at info@ases-assn.org.

December 1st Deadline: Young Scholars Memorial Fellowship Award

The Young Scholars Memorial Fellowship Award is an international award to promote an enriching and supportive climate that shines a spotlight on brilliant young shoulder and elbow surgeons and encourages the pursuit of academic excellence and involvement. This award is to be given out annually to “young scholars,” defined as shoulder/elbow surgeons in their first (5) years of clinical practice or Shoulder & Elbow Fellows. This award was created to honor some of the young shoulder & elbow surgeons we have lost prematurely, including Doug Harryman, Alexandra “Sandy” Kirkley, Birgit Werner, Stefano Carbone, and Dominik Meyer.

Two awards will be given annually and will provide the recipient $1500.00 USD to assist with their attendance at the ASES Annual Meeting. One award will be specifically targeted each year to enhance diversity in our specialty. This is an international award and is open to all nationalities.

Applications for this scholarship are due by Dec 1st.

Please complete an application to be considered for this award. For more information on this award, interested applicants may contact Steve Mlodoch (smlodoch@ases-assn.org), Dr. Vani Sabesan (sabes001@gmail.com), or Dr. Oke Anakwenze (oke.anakwenze@duke.edu).

ASES Advocacy Corner

Technological innovation in Orthopaedics has placed shoulder and elbow surgery at the forefront of modern medical advances. Modern techniques and implants now allow us to provide patients with similarly successful results to traditional approaches but with less invasive, less morbid, and faster recovery alternatives. Unfortunately, insurance coverage prevents access to some of these options for many patients. The Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) antiquated approach to implant coverage places our healthcare system at risk for exacerbating health disparities. As a result, many patients with Medicare are unaware that they may have limited access to increasingly common treatment alternatives as their neighbors with commercial plans. We should continue to advocate on behalf of our patients to improve implant coverage parity. Educating our legislators and policy makers on how implant coverage impacts their constituents is equally as important as our surgical prowess and the care we provide.

"The Shoulder"

by Ernest Amory Codman, MD

A Great Holiday Gift for Your Fellow or Resident!

Show your appreciation to your residents and fellows with a gift of

E.A. Codman’s “The Shoulder”.

Get and Give–Net Proceeds are a Donation in Your Name to The ASES Foundation!

On behalf of the ASES Foundation and the Board of Trustees, we present to you our reprinting of this classic book by the man who made the first and the most lasting imprint on our field. Ernest Amory Codman’s The Shoulder: Rupture of the Supraspinatus Tendon and Other Lesions In or About the Subacromial Bursa has been, is now, and will always be a must read and a constant reference for those individuals who have any interest in the field of shoulder. At the prompting of Bill Mallon and Carl Basamania, we have indexed the entire book for greater ease of reference. As Codman wrote in the Autobiographic Preface, “And now this book is presented to you as a final illustration of my life work, rather than as a monograph on the shoulder.” It is our hope that this book will find its way into private and public libraries to allow for a deeper appreciation of the shoulder, and of EA Codman. 100% of the proceeds will support the ASES Foundation and its programs.

ASES Grant Opportunities

ASES Research Grant

Each year, the society issues a call for proposals encouraging new investigators to apply for seed and start-up funding for promising shoulder and elbow research projects. Grants of up to $20,000, for work to be performed over 12-24 months, are considered. Only orthopaedic surgeons acting as principal investigators are eligible to apply. All applications are reviewed and graded by the ASES Research Committee.

Candidate Research Grant

In an effort to provide research assistance to Candidate members, the ASES will offer an annual grant of $10,000 to the most deserving applicant. This grant was started thanks to the generosity of 4 donors. Dr. Felix Savoie, Dr. Anthony Romeo, Dr. Matthew Ramsey, and Dr. William Levine.

PJI Research Grant

The ASES PJI Grant is designed to provide supplementary funds, or funding for pilot studies which will lead to larger foundation or government grants. The focus can be on any aspect of scientific study that affects the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of shoulder prosthetic joint infection. A grant of up to $10,000, for work to be performed over 12-24 months, will be considered. Only orthopaedic surgeons acting as principal investigators are eligible to apply.

Applications for all 3 grants are due by February 21, 2025. Completed applications should be emailed to ASES at info@ases-assn.org
