ASES News - October 2024

Presidential Message from Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, MD, PhD

Dear ASES Members:

It is my honor and pleasure to have been selected to serve all of you as the 41st President of our beloved Society.

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate Dr. Jed Kuhn and all members of the 2023-2024 ASES Executive Committee for a great year with many accomplishments. Amongst others, a new strategic plan was developed, drafted and approved to guide ASES over the next five years. In addition, the 2024 Annual Meeting in San Antonio was a complete success by every metric: educational content, networking opportunities, and exposure to other very important aspects of our professional lives, such as advocacy, DEI and professional development and growth. Congratulations to Drs. Hettrich, Khazzam and Spencer for a wonderful program. For ASES members who could not attend the annual meeting, please note that several bylaw changes were approved at the business meetings, and the updated bylaws will be available on the ASES website.

Main 2024-2025 ASES Initiatives

Weekly updates on ASES activities

Educational offerings: solidify and expand

New strategic plan implementation

Close collaboration with ASES Foundation and JSES Family

ASES brand strengthening

The ASES Foundation and the family of JSES Journals represent two very important entities under the wings of ASES. The ASES Foundation now has a great committee structure, and a brand-new strategic plan. Under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Abboud and his many committee chairs and members, the ASES Foundation has developed campaigns that have been extremely successful for both fund-raising and public awareness. Continued growth of our funds combined with careful steering of fund allocations are key for our members.

After 17 years of service, Dr. Bill Mallon will transition to supervise all Journals of our JSES Family, whereas Dr. Jed Kuhn was selected as JSES Editor-in-Chief, and Dr. Frank Cordasco leads the JSES Boards of Trustees. Peer-review is essential to maintain high-quality publication standards and publish research that will truly help our members, patients and society. Please continue to help by providing high-quality peer reviews when requested.

I would also like to welcome all new ASES members and express my gratitude to all of you who have accepted positions to serve as Chair, Co-Chair or Member of our many Committees and Task Forces. Committees and Task Forces truly are the bloodline of our Society, and each of these groups is working hard and accomplishing multiple projects.

Thank you also to Dr. April Armstrong and Dr. Robert Tashjian for accepting their positions as Vice-President and Member-at-Large, respectively. Drs. Xavier Duralde and George Athwal just finished their term at the Executive Committee and will be missed, although I am sure that their contributions to ASES will continue through alternative avenues.

Thank you also to all members of our central administrative office under the leadership of our Executive Director, Anna Quintanilla. Without the hard work of all of you, it would not be possible to accomplish so many activities at various levels. Similarly, I would like to acknowledge the support and bidirectional collaboration between ASES and the Orthopedic Industry, beneficial to all involved.

Reading these lines, you may get a glimpse of how active, strong and welcoming American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons is. In this first Presidential message, I would like to share with all members a few items I would like to help accomplish this year on behalf of our Society:

  1. Provide all members with updates on the many activities accomplished by American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons by means of short video messages, in addition to the monthly Presidential messages
  2. Solidify and possibly expand our educational offerings to areas such as revision shoulder arthroplasty, elbow surgery, and enduring digital content
  3. Explain and help implement our new strategic plan in collaboration with all committees and task forces
  4. Collaborate closely with the ASES Foundation and our JSES Family of Journals
  5. Strengthen the ASES brand through deliberate communication, marketing and awareness efforts

I am here to help. My e-mail address is sanchezsotelo.joaquin@mayo.edu. Do not hesitate to contact me if I can aid with any issues related to our Society.

Respectfully,

Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo MD PhD

Apply Now for the 2025 SECEC Exchange Fellowship Program

“My traveling fellowship was the most formative month of my training so far. I gained valuable insights into various techniques, practices, and the nuances of different healthcare systems and patient management approaches. Some consistent themes focused on shoulder and elbow care, including the latest in bone loss management for shoulder instability, advancements in reverse TSA, and the best options for rotator cuff repair. I’ve integrated many of these learnings into my current practice, and not a day goes by where my time in Europe doesn’t shape the care I provide.” Jonathan Barlow, MD – 2023 SECEC Traveling Fellow

“When I look back, I’m confident this will stand out as one of the most important milestones in my career.” Peter Chalmers, MD – 2023 SECEC Traveling Fellow

The three to four-week SECEC exchange fellowship will be in September/October of 2025. Applicants must be no more than 10 years out of their fellowship as of December 31, 2024, practicing in the United States or Canada, board-eligible, or certified orthopaedic surgeons with a special interest and experience in shoulder and elbow research and patient care.

The application deadline is November 30th, 2024.

2025 Traveling Fellows will receive the following benefits:

  • Eligibility for an ASES Research Grant.
  • All travel and hotel expenses will be covered and fellows will receive a small stipend after completion of travel.
  • After completing your traveling fellowship, submit a testimonial to the ASES office, which will be included on the ASES website and communicated through the monthly newsletter to members.

ASES Advocacy Corner

Technological innovation in Orthopaedics has placed shoulder and elbow surgery at the forefront of modern medical advances. Modern techniques and implants now allow us to provide patients with similarly successful results to traditional approaches but with less invasive, less morbid, and faster recovery alternatives. Unfortunately, insurance coverage prevents access to some of these options for many patients. The Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) antiquated approach to implant coverage places our healthcare system at risk for exacerbating health disparities. As a result, many patients with Medicare are unaware that they may have limited access to increasingly common treatment alternatives as their neighbors with commercial plans. We should continue to advocate on behalf of our patients to improve implant coverage parity. Educating our legislators and policy makers on how implant coverage impacts their constituents is equally as important as our surgical prowess and the care we provide.

Thank you for Supporting the ASES Foundation at the Annual Meeting!

Thank you for making the ASES Foundation’s first-ever auction at the 2024 Annual Meeting such an incredible success! Your enthusiasm and generosity helped raise an impressive $400,000 to support our mission. Highlights included an exciting live auction at the Neer Circle Dinner and a dedicated Paddle Raise for Multi-Centered Studies, along with a fantastic silent auction and on-site donations. As we continue our efforts, we’re aiming for 90% member participation in donating to the Foundation this year. Your support is invaluable, and together, we’re advancing shoulder and elbow care through research and education.

A Great Gift for Your Fellow or Resident!

Show your appreciation to your residents and fellows with a gift of

E.A. Codman’s “The Shoulder”.

Get and Give–Net Proceeds are a Donation in Your Name to The ASES Foundation!

On behalf of the ASES Foundation and the Board of Trustees, we present to you our reprinting of this classic book by the man who made the first and the most lasting imprint on our field. Ernest Amory Codman’s The Shoulder: Rupture of the Supraspinatus Tendon and Other Lesions In or About the Subacromial Bursa has been, is now, and will always be a must read and a constant reference for those individuals who have any interest in the field of shoulder. At the prompting of Bill Mallon and Carl Basamania, we have indexed the entire book for greater ease of reference. As Codman wrote in the Autobiographic Preface, “And now this book is presented to you as a final illustration of my life work, rather than as a monograph on the shoulder.” It is our hope that this book will find its way into private and public libraries to allow for a deeper appreciation of the shoulder, and of EA Codman. 100% of the proceeds will support the ASES Foundation and its programs.

ASES Grant Opportunities

ASES Research Grant

Each year, the society issues a call for proposals encouraging new investigators to apply for seed and start-up funding for promising shoulder and elbow research projects. All applications are reviewed and graded by the ASES Research Committee.

Candidate Research Grant

In an effort to provide research assistance to Candidate members, the ASES will offer an annual grant of $10,000 to the most deserving applicant. This grant was started thanks to the generosity of 4 donors. Dr. Felix Savoie, Dr. Anthony Romeo, Dr. Matthew Ramsey, and Dr. William Levine.

PJI Research Grant

The ASES PJI Grant is designed to provide supplementary funds, or funding for pilot studies which will lead to larger foundation or government grants.
