ASES News - September 2024

Presidential Message from John (Jed) E. Kuhn, MD

Fellow ASES Members,

It is almost time for the Annual Meeting! We have an incredible event with fantastic educational offerings, social activities and a great location in the heart of Texas! I hope to see you all there! As always, your society has a lot going on, and we will be reviewing much of this at the Annual Meeting but a few highlights:

Strategy Session Results

Over the past year is has been my duty and honor to help the ASES conduct our vision and strategy planning. I want to thank my Strategic Planning Task Force (Joe Abboud, Tony Miniaci, Carolyn Hettrich, and Chris Klifto) and the dozens of the ASES member representatives, staff, and other partners for participating in this important effort. We interviewed stakeholders, identified goals, established initiatives to reach those goals, and came up with over 70 defined action items with timelines to be completed over the next five years. If you are going to be serving as Chairs of our Committees (especially Education, Research, Advocacy, and Member Experience Committees), be ready. You will be getting your assignments very soon! Thanks to all of you for helping set the course. The final documents will be reviewed and approved at the ASES Executive Committee meeting in October and will be made public shortly after. There are some wonderful initiatives that will strengthen our Society and will unfold in the years to come!

Technology Update

Our Technology Committee and the Presidential VR Task Force continue to make progress bringing ASES into the future! Many of our members now have the ASES 365 app on their phones and are amazed at the features it offers. Please be sure to download it to your phones before the annual meeting as voting during the business meetings will be through the app. Also, go on the ASES website and update your profile. We secretly put Hulk Hogan’s photo on one of our members incomplete profiles. Log in to be sure your profile does not have a photo of Hulk Hogan where yours should be!

Bill Mallon: Thank You for Your JSES Leadership

For the past 16 years, Dr. William Mallon has been thriving as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. In January I will be stepping in to try to fill the role. Bill has guided the Journal through multiple challenges and has positioned JSES to as one of the highest impact factor orthopaedic journals. He has grown our shoulder and elbow publishing from one to four journals. His impact is extraordinary. While I do have some trepidation following his success at JSES, I am happy to report that he will be serving as the JSES Executive Editor for the Family of Journals. As a token of our appreciation, ASES gave Dr. Mallon a nice road bike to use in the mountains of New Hampshire. Thanks, Bill, for all you have done for JSES and ASES!

A Sad Note

Mark D. Price MD, PhD, ASES Member, former head team physician of the New England Patriots, and decorated US Navy veteran died at age 52 on August 16, 2024, after a battle with leiomyosarcoma. Mark joined ASES as an Associate Member in 2020 and was promoted to Active Member status this year. Most recently, Mark served the ASES on the membership committee and was a colleague and friend to many of us. His enthusiasm, kindness, and perspective on what is important in life will be missed. He is survived by his wife Stephanie, and three children. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

This will be my last message to you as President of ASES. It has been an honor and true pleasure to do my best to keep our Society great over the past year. We are blessed to have so many members committed to advancing shoulder and elbow care and we could not do all the ASES does without your help. Thanks for all you do for our Society!

Some consistent themes focused on shoulder and elbow care, including the latest in bone loss management for shoulder instability, advancements in reverse TSA, and the best options for rotator cuff repair. ASES Advocacy Corner

Technological innovation in Orthopaedics has placed shoulder and elbow surgery at the forefront of modern medical advances. Modern techniques and implants now allow us to provide patients with similarly successful results to traditional approaches but with less invasive, less morbid, and faster recovery alternatives. Unfortunately, insurance coverage prevents access to some of these options for many patients. The Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) antiquated approach to implant coverage places our healthcare system at risk for exacerbating health disparities. As a result, many patients with Medicare are unaware that they may have limited access to increasingly common treatment alternatives as their neighbors with commercial plans. We should continue to advocate on behalf of our patients to improve implant coverage parity. Educating our legislators and policy makers on how implant coverage impacts their constituents is equally as important as our surgical prowess and the care we provide.

Spotlight on San Antonio

Volume 8: Spotlight on ASES Annual Meeting Venues

Coates Chapel at the University of Texas San Antonio

The San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter

The Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum

With just a couple of weeks left before the ASES 2024 Annual Meeting, let’s take a look at the venues that will be hosting us in San Antonio!

The San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter: At a tip height of 546 feet, the 38-floor hotel is the tallest building in San Antonio and and second tallest structure in the city (the Tower Of Americas is taller). It is also the tallest hotel in Texas outside of Dallas.

The hotel, which was completed in 1988, is located across the Riverwalk from the Henry B. Gonzales

Convention Center, and overlooks the Rivercenter lagoon, an expansion branch of the Sam Antonio Rover Walk. The hotel is connected to the Rivercenter Mall at two levels and has direct access to the Riverwalk. The building was designed by RTKL Associates and is intended to emulate the twin bell towers of Mission Concepcion or the Cathedral of San Fernando

Coates Chapel at the University of Texas San Antonio — Neer Circle Members attending Thursday’s reception and dinner will gather at this venue, a unique and serene space designed for reflection and spiritual activities. Named after the late Dr. Robert A. Coates, a former faculty member and prominent figure in the university community, the chapel serves as a multi-faith facility, welcoming individuals from diverse religious backgrounds.

The chapel was dedicated in 2001 and reflects UTSA’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. Its architecture combines modern design with elements that promote tranquility, making it a popular venue for weddings, memorial services, and other significant events. The surrounding landscape is carefully curated to enhance the peaceful atmosphere, further establishing Coates Chapel as a cherished landmark on campus.

Throughout its history, the chapel has become a focal point for students and faculty alike, fostering a sense of belonging and providing a space for spiritual growth and connection.

The Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum, the site of Friday evening’s Buckhorn Bash, is a historic venue that blends the charm of an old saloon with rich Texas history. Founded in 1881 by Albert Friedrich, the Buckhorn Saloon originally operated as a bar and restaurant, gaining notoriety for its unique decor and lively atmosphere.

Over the years, the saloon has become famous for its extensive collection of taxidermy animals and Western memorabilia, showcasing the spirit of the Old West. In the 2000s, it expanded to include the Texas Ranger Museum, which celebrates the storied history of the Texas Rangers, the state’s legendary law enforcement agency.

Today, visitors can explore exhibits detailing the Rangers’ contributions to Texas history, as well as enjoy the saloon’s vibrant ambiance. The Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum remains a beloved landmark, drawing locals and tourists alike with its blend of entertainment and historical significance.

We look forward to seeing you all in San Antonio!!!
