When my election was first announced, I sought advice from my mentor Dr. Louis Bigliani, and with his usual wisdom-filled, terse response, he stated,&#8221; Don&#8217;t try to change too much.&#8221; As I have sat on the presidential line for the last 2 years, I understand better the meaning of his counsel. I am following a long line of highly talented and hard-working presidents who have made an impact on our society every year. Change is not necessary but continued advancement is. My goal this year is to move the ball forward and help to advance the initiatives that are in place. In addition, there are always housekeeping issues related to the management of an organization which require attention to assure the viability of our society moving forward. I want to start by thanking Dr. Mark Frankle for his hard work, enthusiasm, and success in leading our society through a very difficult time over the past year. His leadership has been outstanding and has been a model for the rest of us on Executive Committee. He deserves the gratitude of our entire membership.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>The initiatives started over the last several years include an increased involvement in Advocacy, the development of the Neer Circle and associated Delphi studies, the development of a DEI committee and greater awareness of inclusion of underrepresented minorities in our specialty, and a closer look at how well we support the experience of our entire membership in the society. Each of these initiatives is extremely important to improve our member experience and to allow us to harness the energy and knowledge of our society to advance the care of shoulder and elbow problems worldwide. Our relationship with the Academy continues to evolve and will require attention over the next several years.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Our Journal remains strong through the support of all of you as well as our international partners who are critical to its success both in terms of leadership on the board as well as submissions. Its value come from peer review and I encourage all of you to participate in this important supporting activity. We will now be able to provide greater support financially to our international members in gratitude for their contributions to the Journal and will do so through expanded support for traveling fellowships as well as expanded editorial support. More to come on that later.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>As our society has separated from the administrative support by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, there have been multiple laborious tasks created around this disengagement. These behind-the-scenes activities have taken up immense amounts of time from the last 3 presidents and have included moving to a new office, multiple human resource activities including the creation of new job descriptions and contracts for our administrators and now the consolidation of our finances between the Society, Foundation, and Journal. These are somewhat thankless activities required to maintain the health of an organization and have required significant effort from our administrative staff and executive committee throughout the past couple of years.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>The cloud of COVID has been over our heads for the last couple of years and hopefully will begin to dissipate this year to allow us to interact in person through courses and meetings. We have placed the safety of our membership above all else and have had to make some very difficult decisions but now look forward to a time when we can be together again.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>I want to thank you all for placing your trust in me and allowing me to lead this great organization. This three to four week Asian exchange fellowship will begin in the fall of 2022. Applicants must be no more than 10 years out of their fellowship as of December 31, 2021, practicing in the United States or Canada, board eligible or certified orthopaedic surgeons with a special interest and experience in shoulder and elbow research and patient care.
