Northwestern University is proud to offer a one-year fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. The fellowship has been created with the intention to provide exposure to a wide breadth of non-operative and operative treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders. Fellows will encounter conditions as straight forward as traumatic rotator cuff tears and as complex as revision shoulder arthroplasty, elbow arthroplasty and superior capsular reconstruction.
The three primary faculty see in excess of 10,000 patient visits each year and perform over 1300 surgical cases annually. The fellow will have the opportunity to perform shoulder arthroplasty with a variety of different prostheses and experience shoulder arthroscopy in both the lateral decubitus and beach chair positions. Additionally, the fellow with have adequate exposure to elbow arthroscopy, elbow trauma and elbow arthroplasty.
Clinic and surgery take place at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital as well as an independent outpatient surgical center. This combination of venues will help prepare the fellow for clinical practice as they will experience a variety of different ways to provide patient care. The main campus is located in downtown Chicago steps from Michigan Avenue at the state-of-the art Center for Comprehensive Orthopaedic and Spine Care which has over 40 examination rooms and 8 dedicated operating rooms. Northwestern Memorial Hospital has been ranked 1stin both Chicago metro area and in Illinois for 6 consecutive years and is ranked 13thbest hospital in the country by US News and World Report. There is an opportunity for coverage of the Chicago Cubs with the faculty.
The fellow will interact with residents and medical students enrolled in the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. They will be expected to actively participate in conferences, journal clubs, and cadaveric labs. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery also has an ACGME accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship that accepts one fellow per year. There are a total of 7 faculty that both the shoulder/elbow and sports medicine fellow have the opportunity to work with.
It is expected that the fellow will prepare several manuscripts during the year. Ample support is available through the department and Northwestern University.

Prospective applicants must have completed an accredited orthopaedic surgery residency program, be board-eligible or board-certified, and have an Illinois state medical license before the fellowship begins.

Important dates for the 2020-2021 Match Cycle
Application Start Date: Monday, August 6, 2018 (application will not be posted until this date)
Application Target Date: Thursday, September 6, 2018

- This is NOT a deadline. Some programs accept applications at any time; others may set a deadline.
- It is the applicant's responsibility to contact training programs for individual deadline dates.

Rank List Deadline: Tuesday, April 16, 2019 (12:00 PM PT)
- ALL rank lists must be submitted by 12:00 PM (noon) PST.
- After the deadline rank lists choices will be locked and no changes can be made.

Information for the 2020-2021 Orthopaedic Shoulder & Elbow Match
- The application for next year's match cycle is centralized with SF Match. You can register with the SF Match and complete your application through their website.
- All rank list information is to be submitted to SF Match, not the ASES office.
All fellowship programs require a completed application via the Central Application Service (CAS) with SF Match, a CV, a photo, and three (3) letters of recommendation. There may be additional items required by each program. These required items vary by location. Please work with the programs directly to ensure you have submitted all the required documents for that program.
Attention Applicants: In order to participate with the Orthopaedic Shoulder & Elbow Match process, you will have to register through the SF Match.
There is a $50 non-refundable applicant registration fee that covers registration and matching. This is paid directly to the SF Match. Once registered, applicants can manage their account by logging in to their account profile. To register, click on “Register” and follow the steps. The registration fee can be paid with a Visa or a MasterCard.
If you do not take this step, you will not be included in the match process. Simply sending your application materials to a program does not make you eligible to be part of the match.
