ASES News - December 2023

Presidential Message from John (Jed) E. Kuhn, MD

Fellow members of ASES,

I wish you happiness and health during this holiday season and hope you are taking some time to relax as we try to meet our patients’ requests to get everything done before the new year and their deductibles start again! I am happy to report on a few things going on with your society.

Thanks to our members for renewing your 2023 memberships! About 98% of you have submitted your dues, and we are grateful! Dues are the most important source of funds that allow us to provide you with all the fantastic member benefits ASES provides.

The SHED educational platform has some great content from experts within our society who have been submitting original content instructional videos. We will soon have highlights of the Annual Meeting uploaded for those who could not attend, you can review the content and get some CME credit!

The DocMatter platform is growing rapidly. We have seen a significant increase in the number of posts each month and are getting great input on complicated cases from experts around the world! If you have not already downloaded the app and registered, you may want to do so. It is an easy and efficient way to learn.

The ASES has signed a letter of intent to start working with PrecisionOS, a company focused on developing educational content in virtual reality. The ASES Executive Committee, Education Committee, and Technology Committee all feel we need to move into the virtual reality space and are excited to partner with CEO Danny Goel, a member of ASES. We believe this technology will have a tremendous impact on the education of our members and are excited to start working in this space.

The Exchange Fellowship Committee is working on developing an exchange fellowship with the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia! We will be hosting an Aussie in 2024 and are looking forward to sending some of our members down under in the near future!
Please remember to register for the ASES Specialty Day on February 16, 2024, at the AAOS meeting in San Francisco. We are joining with AOSSM and have a great program planned!

Preparations are underway for 2024 Shoulder and Elbow Week (May 13-18, 2024) with sites in Asheville NC, Boston MA, Buffalo NY, Denver CO, Lexington KY, Phoenix AZ, Salt Lake City UT, and West Palm Beach FL. These events have been an amazing and incredible way to network with fellow members. You can register on the ASES website! (I will be in Asheville, NC!).

Finally, I wanted to let you know that we are working on our next ASES Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. You will want to save the dates: October 16-19, 2024. We are planning some very special events, including a breakfast for our women shoulder and elbow surgeons! We will also be looking to add more social events for our candidate members to network with past presidents of our society. More details will be coming, but I think you will be as excited as I am!

Happy Holidays and Have a Great New Year!

Jed Kuhn

2023 Annual Meeting Abstract Compendium Now Available

The ASES Annual Meeting Abstract Compendium is now available to all members of the society. The compendium includes over 700 abstracts submitted for the ASES 2023 Annual Meeting this past October, but not selected for a podium or poster presentation. This free benefit not only advances the mission and vision of ASES but also directly aligns with the society’s strategic plan. We hope that you will enjoy having access to the compendium.

This compendium has been made possible by support from Enovis. The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons gratefully acknowledge Enovis in support of this project and in support of the Society and our mission.

The link below will take you to the ASES Member’s Only section where you will be asked to login. Once the page is accessed, you will find a link to the compendium. After opening the link, you may navigate the full document via the Live Table of Contents which provides an alphabetical listing of all abstracts, sorted by subject matter. At any point, you may use the link at the bottom of each page to return to the Table Of Contents. For your convenience, the entire compilation is searchable using standard search functions.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know!

American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Foundation

Dr. Abboud Requests Your Support During The Opening of ASES Foundation’s 2023 Year-End Appeal

Dear ASES Member:

I am reaching out to you as Chairman of The ASES Foundation as we open our foundation’s 2023 Year-End Appeal. My goal has been to help enable The ASES Foundation’s new mission,

“To develop and provide resources to advance shoulder and elbow care.”

Your giving supports critical foundation programs and research. If you have given in the past, please accept our most sincere thanks for your generosity in supporting our foundation programs including.

  • Fellowship Education Grants (25+ Programs & 30+ Fellows)
  • DEI Initiatives
  • Exchange Fellowship Program
  • Mentorship Programs
  • National Shoulder and Elbow Week / Local Research Grants
  • Multi-Centered Studies
  • Trends in Shoulder Arthroplasty Report
  • Candidate Research Grants

These programs are impactful, maybe even to you, your residents, or fellows, but they require annual financial support and collective giving from all ASES members. Here are two stories of the impact of The ASES Foundation’s funded Fellowship Exchange Program:

  • “The ASES Exchange Fellowship was critical to my future success as a shoulder and elbow surgeon. Those early visits led to long-lasting friendships that have significantly impacted my life and career.” William N. Levine, MD
  • “The ability to broaden your perspective and see that people think differently about shoulder and elbow problems, in different parts of the world, was really eye-opening to me.” Thomas (Quin) Throckmorton, MD

I know you support the ASES Foundation and the ASES society in many ways, and I hope you will consider donating and supporting our foundation’s year-end appeal. We would love to be able to boast a 100% participation by all our members. Any donation, $25, $100, $1,000, or more is greatly appreciated.

Whether you’ve already donated or have yet to donate, I hope you will consider supporting the ASES Foundation—the life-line to many ASES programs. You may make single donations or pledges either:

Donors are recognized on our website here.

Thank you again for your consideration, and we hope that we can count on your continued generosity going forward.

Sincerely,

Joseph A. Abboud, MD
Chairman, ASES Foundation

Advocacy Spotlight

ALERT American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons!

Over the past 20 years, cost of practice rose 40%. Hospital payments increased 65%. Medicare payments to surgeons increased 10%. Regulations ever increase. (See figure below.) Hospitals, Pharmaceuticals, Realtors, The Chamber, and Insurers out lobby/out finance us. Lobbying is money.

Our ASES Political Action Committee is prioritizing these topics during this Congress:
1. Unburdening Medicare Advantage prior authorization (HR4968) 2. Reversing the Affordable Care Act ban on physician owned hospitals (HR2584) 3. Stopping 20 years of automatic annual Medicare cuts to physician payments based on budget neutrality (HR2474)

Please consider being part of the solution by financially supporting your PAC (AAOS PAC). Your Advocacy Committee is committed to molding policy decisions to better our patients, our surgeons, and our specialty and to push back hospital, legal, governmental, and other antagonists. We welcome our members feedback and input. Let us hear from you.

With our thanks,
Happy Holidays to all!

John Moor, MD

All applications are reviewed and graded by the ASES Research Committee.
