Update from the ASES Member Experience Committee
The Member Experience Committee (MEC) is hard at work to serve all ASES members. The MEC is excited to see the Leadership Development Program flourish beyond expectations. The current sophomore class is halfway through their progression in the program. The MEC will be publishing an editorial article highlighting the LDP very soon. The next class of LDP participants will be selected in 2024. If you want to become more active in the ASES, do not miss out on this opportunity.
By now you should be familiar with the SHED. The SHED is our society’s online shoulder and elbow-related video content. Currently, members can view past meetings, the acclaimed 2020 Core Curriculum Sessions, and the ASES Virtual Journal Club. The SHED is available online (https://ases.mclms.net/en/) and on the ASES App.
The MEC is working alongside the Education and Technology Committee to bring more content to the SHED. Expect to have access to video content from the masters within our society very soon.
The MEC is working with Dr. MacDonald to increase the ASES society’s influence internationally. Canada is our Guest Nation for the Annual Meeting. Dr. Ryan T. Bicknell has joined the MEC this year to offer his insight into how to be the best host for our guests. Dr. Bicknell is the Paul B. Helliwell Chair in Orthopaedic Research and Associate Professor of Surgery and Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

Update to the ASES Political Advocacy Committee
The ASES Advocacy Committee has focused on research, education, and interaction over the past year. On the research front, we have conducted two distinct projects. The first project was an updated survey of ASES Members’ attitudes about advocacy and politics, which represents a five-year follow-up on a similar project published in JSES in 2018.
Our second project was a multi-center study on prior authorization review (PAR) of imaging and surgery by insurance companies and how the PAR process delays care unnecessarily and increases health care costs. Both of these papers are in the submission process at JSES.
In the education arena, we hosted a symposium about advocacy at the 2022 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, and we have plans for further advocacy-themed sessions and presentations at the upcoming 2023 Meeting in Scottsdale. Dr. Melissa Wright co-hosted an advocacy-themed podcast featuring our committee co-chair Dr. Scott Steinmann and former AAOS President Dr. Gerry Williams. This podcast is set to air in March and will help educate listeners further on the importance of advocacy. The Mark Frankle Health Policy Award was granted to three rising stars in our society: Dr. Hafiz Kassam, Dr. Adam Khan, and Dr. Miguel Ramirez. These surgeons, as well as several other members of the Advocacy Committee, will be spending time in Washington on an independent Capitol Hill visit as well as attending the NOLC in the fall as we interact with federal-level lawmakers to advocate for our patients and our members.
We look forward to further growth of interest within the society about this critical topic of advocacy.
The ASES 2023 Specialty Day will be held on Tuesday, March 7th, 2023, at the Venetian Resort and Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. With the AAOS new model, there will be two days dedicated to Specialty Society programming, one at the front (Tuesday) and one at the back end (Saturday). With our 12 noon start time, we are confident that our participation will be strong, allowing attendees to arrive that morning!
Our 2023 Specialty Day Program Co-Chairs, Dr. Jay Keener, and Dr. Katie Vadasdi have developed a great program and we hope you will join us for this popular event!

Hawkins Award - New!
The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons is proud to announce the newly created ASES Hawkins Award. The goals of this award are as follows:
- Encourage the submission of international high-quality research projects to our Annual Meeting
- Honor Dr. Richard Hawkins for his contributions to the field of shoulder and elbow surgery and to ASES
Award Details
- The ASES Hawkins award will be granted once a year unless no submission is meritorious
- The awarded submission will be announced at the ASES Annual Meeting
- Projects completed in North America (United States, Canada) by North American (United States, Canada) members cannot be considered for the award
- At least one author of the submission awarded must be ASES Corresponding Member
- At the time of abstract submission by international applicants, if the authors are interested in being considered for the award, they need to: (1) indicate their willingness to be considered for the Hawkins award, and (2) commit to submit a completed manuscript to the Research Committee
- The Research Committee (already selecting the Morrey and Neer award) will score international submissions for the Hawkins award and select the winner
The submitter granted the Hawkins award will receive the following benefits:
- Oral presentation at the ASES meeting
- Special mention in the ASES Annual Program
- A monetary award commensurate with other similar awards (USD 1,500)
- Publication at JSES International free of charge
Please note that submission is connected with the Annual Meeting Call for Abstracts. Only international papers accepted for presentation during the meeting will be considered.
Calling All Fellows: Submit Your Abstract for ASES Fellows' Day at SDSI
The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons is again partnering with the San Diego Shoulder Institute on a symposium for graduating Shoulder & Elbow and Sports Fellows.
The ASES Fellows’ Day at SDSI will be held on Friday, June 16th, 2023, durimg thel San Diego Shoulder Institute (SDSI) in San Diego, CA. The symposium will feature short presentations by fellows who submit abstracts for consideration and are accepted, culminating with the Robert H. Cofield, MD Award for the highest-rated Oral Presentation and the Richard J. Hawkins, MD Award for the highest-rated Poster Presentation.
We hope to see you all in San Diego in June!

2024 National Shoulder and Elbow Week Site Host Applications are Now Open
Due March 15th
Dear ASES Members,
The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Foundation established National Shoulder and Elbow Week (NSEW) in 2021 across five sites to raise awareness of its mission and initiatives within the society as well as strengthen local networks and a sense of community among its members.
2022 events were hosted by ten cities across North America and were incredibly successful in bringing together hundreds of surgeons, patients, and industry leaders. Across all 2022 sites, NSEW raised over $325,000 net to support our educational and research activities. In addition, the organizing committees in each city may apply for 50% of the net funds raised for their local causes and initiatives. Grants from 2021 NSEW are being utilized to fund research projects, scholarships to regional meetings, DEI initiatives, patient education platforms, and patient-reported outcome measures.
To build on the success of this ASES Foundation initiative, we plan to move NSEW to May 2024 to avoid overlapping with the ASES Annual Meeting and maximize participation. Planning begins now!

We are thrilled to announce that the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons’ first Shoulder and Elbow self-assessment exam for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is now available for purchase. The $60 exam is available for ASES Members and Non-Members.
The 100-question scored online examination helps fulfill the SAE requirements for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC). The examination has been curated by a team of expert shoulder and elbow surgeons, all of whom are ASES members. Each question is followed by a detailed explanation and supported by current references. Earn 10 SAE and CME credits with a passing score of 70% or higher (The exam can be retaken until a passing score is attained.)

Celebrate Ernest Amory Codman, MD, and Help Support the ASES Foundation
In celebration of Ernest Amory Codman’s 150th birthday (December 30th) the ASES Foundation has published a reprint of his 1934 book “The Shoulder: Rupture of the Supraspinatus Tendon and Other Lesions In or About the Sub acromial Bursa”. This classic has been, is now, and will always be a must-read for those individuals who have any interest in the field of shoulder surgery. This edition will be fully indexed and include a dedication from ASESF as well as a prologue written by William Mallon, MD. 100% of the proceeds will support the ASES Foundation and its programs.
2023 Clinician Scholar Career Development Program
The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons is partnering with the Orthopaedic Research Society on the 2023 Clinician Scholar Career Development Program (CSCDP) for residents and fellows. The CSCDP is an annual two-day training workshop for orthopaedic residents in their PGY2-PGY5 years, surgeons in fellowships, and junior faculty (through year three) who have the potential and desire to become orthopaedic clinician scholars. Clinician scholars advance the field of orthopaedics through innovative research and peer-reviewed funding. ASES will sponsor 2 member applicants interested in pursuing this opportunity.
